(26/06/2009)Every school has a duty to manage its asbestos plan under the Control of Asbestos Regulations which came into force in 2006 (2007 for NI). A head teacher is the duty manager and could be fined or even jailed for breaches of the regulations.

(04/04/2008) Members are advised of the recently published guidance produced for headteachers on Preventing Work-Related Mental Health Conditions by Tackling Stress by the NUT. UNISON was involved in the drawing up of this guidance and it is as equally applicable to support staff as to teaching staff.

New Powers to Screen and Search Pupils for Weapons

15/03/2007) As part of the Violent Crime Reduction Act the government is introducing proposals that will allow head teachers and authorised staff to search without consent, pupils whom they suspect are carrying a knife or other weapon. The power comes into force on 31 May 2007 and the DfES is currently undertaking a consultation on the guidance that will accompany the Act. Although this relates to schools it is relevant to the college sector as well. The full details can be found on the DfES website; http://www.dfes.gov.uk/consultations/
