Community specialist public health nursesUNISON represents the whole health care team. The role of community specialist public health nurse are vital in promoting public health, there roles are varied and they include School Nurses, whose responsibility is to care for children of school age, to monitor their health and well being and be a resource for the school and parents. They liaise with the multi-disciplinary team, manage health promotion events for children and target key areas of concern. Others work with children and the elderly, previously called Health Visitors are responsible for caring for children following birth to school age and in some cases beyond that. The care for a range of people in the community helping them to maintain their independence and directing them to other services, which they may be able to access. Some specialise in certain areas of the community and develop a higher level of knowledge and understanding for example the travellers community.
