What we mean by 'Skills for life''Skills for life' is about everyday English and practical maths. The most common definition of Skills for Life is the ability to:'...read, write and speak in English and to use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general.' In a foreword to a new Unison 'Skills for Life Handbook' - Skills for Life Equals UNISON Business, Dave Prentis says "We need to ask ourselves how anyone can get to grips with their pension rights, join in campaigns or have the confidence to make a claim against their employer, if they struggle with the English and maths that explains it all. Also, the paperwork involved in being a workplace rep could deter potential activists from getting involved and enriching our union". Essential Skills for Health and Social Care (England) project 2004 -6: Report and resources.
