Gaza emergency protests

(31/12/08) Demonstrations and vigils are being held across the country this week as thousands of people turn out in protest against the military action being taken by Israel in Gaza that has resulted in hundreds of Palestinian civilian deaths and casualties.

"Whilst UNISON condemns rocket attacks by Hamas on Israeli civilian targets causing dreadful suffering, the bombing in Gaza is completely disproportionate to the threat faced by Israel,” said UNISON deputy general secretary Keith Sonnet.

“Both sides should agree an immediate ceasefire,” he added “and Israel should open crossings into Gaza to allow humanitarian relief.”

The union is calling on the British government to do all it can to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza and to make clear to the Israeli government that the widespread military assault on Gaza is unacceptable.

All members and branches are being asked to take part in protests and vigils against the violence. There will be demonstrations this Saturday in London, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and other cities. A number of other vigils and protests will be held throughout this week in all regions.

"UNISON is opposed to the use of violence by either side, and we will encourage our members to take part in the local protests being organised across the country,” said Mr. Sonnet.

“We appeal also to both sides to allow humanitarian aid through, to ensure the death toll does not rise any higher due to lack of food and basic medical equipment."
