How young is young?
If you're under 27 years of age then you can get involved with UNISON's young members. We know that there are many members who are still young at heart, but we have to draw the line somewhere!
Already a UNISON member? Make the pledge. Challenge X sets out to achieve 1.5 million members before 2008. |
Supporting young membersUNISON knows that young members need supporting in a variety of ways - that's why we are developing a range of information, advice, support, training, and networking opportunities. Some of these are designed to support young members, and some are for young activists - young members who have got involved with getting the union organised. InformationAs well as the young members webpages on the UNISON site, as a young member you will also receive a copy of our 'Next Generation' newsletter. This is sent out to all members under 27 years of age with UNISON's membership magazine 'U' every three months. If you are not receiving 'Next Generation' please contact your regional young member contact (Young members support at regional). Of course, there are plenty of other pages on UNISON's website which deal with the full picture of the unions activities. Information may also come to you from your branch or your region. You can also sign up for the monthly email bulletin for young members. We keep it to the equivalent of one A4 page of text, and it contains information on upcoming events, news, and links to relevant organisations. (Bulletin sign-up section).TrainingYoung members can get training on UNISON's standard training courses, as well as courses tailored specifically to the needs of branch young members officers at regional level. On top of that there is an annual young members weekend (young members weekend) where each region can send up to 10 young members The weekend event provides information, education, and networking opportunities. All of this is provided free of charge, with your branch or region paying your course fees and expenses to make sure you are never out of pocket for going on our courses.Advice and supportYoung member activists can look to their branch for support and advice, and this is backed up by regional level support through our network of young members' contacts. You can also check out our many publications (Catalogue), and when its necessary get specialist advice. Young activists are entitled to exactly the same level of support as their older colleagues. And of course you get to meet other young members and share ideas, concerns, and have a laugh as well. |
